This type of Tummy Tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, originated in Brazil, in the 1990’s, and is named after Dr. Juarez Avelar. Dr. Avelar chose to develop a technique that could be done simply and easily without significant disruption to surrounding tissues. The technique was later modified to include the use of local anesthesia. This enabled the procedure to be performed safely and easily in the doctor’s office. When local anesthesia is used it is term Tumescent Anesthesia.
The procedure is primarily utilized to remove excess, draping skin in the lower abdomen and upper abdomen. It does not require transplantation of the belly button and there is no over-sewing of the abdominal muscles. Recovery time from this type of tummy tuck is much quicker as compared to the traditional method.
Why Get a Tummy Tuck?
Many patients who are prime candidates for a tummy tuck have excess skin due to common life situations like:
- Genetics (heredity plays a large factor in abdominal fat)
- Pregnancy (some people don’t “snap back” after pregnancy)
- Previous surgeries (former scars have puckered, causing for excess skin)
- Aging (loss of collagen produces more flab)
- Weight loss (especially if you’ve lost a significant amount of weight and have excess skin)
The Tummy Tuck Procedure
The tummy tuck procedure is ideal for those who have reached a stable weight and are in good health. Tummy tuck procedures are not a replacement for weight loss. If you have an “apron” of excess skin hanging over your abdomen, a tummy tuck may be right for you.
During the tummy tuck procedure, our patient will be given a mild oral sedative pre-operatively. Tickle Lipo is performed to the adjacent areas. This ensures a smooth, more complete and desired result. If a previous cesarean has been performed; we may be able to re-use the incision spot. We then remove any excess skin, fat and tissue. After the procedure, the incision is closed with subcuticular stitch to ensure an aesthetically pleasing end result.
A tummy tuck is considered a surgery, and so proper care for the incision is critical upon the patient returning home. The abdominal area may be swollen, but after 1-2 weeks you should be recovered and see your desired result.
Tummy Tuck Results
In addition to a flat stomach that looks like it fits you and your body type, you’ll also get a boost of self-confidence. Embarrassment over excess fat hanging from the abdomen is gone, and your self-esteem is boosted.
